Today I’m going to share some tips on content creation for public speaking. In simple terms, I will provide you with a quick outline of what to say when you give a 20 minute or less talk on stage or video.
Congratulations! You’ve been asked to give a talk or you want to grow and take your business to the next level through live video streaming! Whether you are doing public speaking from stage or producing live or recorded video for your own personal branding, internet marketing, social media marketing or online marketing (like Facebook Live Stream, Periscope and Snapchat) there is a simple format you should use for content creation for greatest impact to your audience.
Structuring Content For Public Speaking
Why Less Is More
When you give a talk the key is to provide your audience with enough information that they walk away remembering what you said. Your goal is that if someone asked your audience what you spoke about, your audience would be able to remember the key points of your talk. This is where less is more in your content. When you try to cover too much information in a short period of time people will walk away not remembering what you spoke about.
Public Speaking Content Creation Format
People will remember your content if you cover 1-2 key points with supporting information, stories and examples. People particularly remember stories. Starting your talk with an attention grabber question or some entertainment is a great way to start. At first you will be nervous, but by following a simple content format and over time with practice you will be a public speaking rock star!
Here is the basic format for your talk:
- Introduction – Who are you? Grab your audience’s attention and introduce your topic by asking your audience a question or share an entertaining or compelling story that leads into your subject.
- Topic A
- Supporting item
- Supporting item
- Example or story
- Topic B

- Close – Summarize the key points of your topic, the take-away’s. Tell your audience where to find you (your website).
- Call to Action – Give your audience something to act on.
Make sure you always leave your audience with your website or how to reach you on social media. Then end with a call to action. The call to action could be a special on a product you are offering or maybe a webinar they can sign up for.
Delivering On-Stage And Live Video Streaming
Public speaking anxiety is normal. Put the energy from your anxiety into your talk. You’ll do great!
There is usually a difference in the style of the delivery for your talk depending on the venue. On-stage public speaking to a live audience is usually a little more formal than doing a live video stream. Speaking on-stage will usually require that you provide PowerPoint slides or your outline for speaking days or weeks before the actual event. A live video stream, like Periscope and Facebook Live Stream, is supposed to be more “raw”, “what you see is what you get”, like a reality show. That’s part of the draw and attraction to live video. Your audience is sharing in the moment with you.
Public Speaking Content and Delivery
Sharing a message to your audience through public speaking from stage or through video broadcasting, remember it’s about providing valuable content to your audience. You don’t have to be perfect, but make sure your points are simple, clearly stated and well-defined so that your audience leavings knowing what you talked about.
Engage And Connect Your Audience
The most important part of delivering your message is engaging and connecting with your audience. This means you have to know your subject so that you can focus on the responses from the audience. Engage your audience by asking survey questions like “How many of you have tried to give a talk and you forgot everything you were going to say?”. Their participation will help you dial in your talk content to the needs of your audience. It also helps pull your audience into your talk.
For live video streams like Periscope, call out the names of the people who join your live video broadcast and ask them to type in where they are from. Also ask your viewers to invite their followers and send “hearts” if they like what you are sharing with them.
When you first start public speaking you will be scared and bad. But push through and keep going! You have to be bad before you can be good; good before you are great; great before you are excellent; excellent before you are a rock star!
You are leading by example! The people at the front of the stage or in front of the camera doing live streaming are the ones who make all the money. There are no short cuts and before long you will be having tons of fun!
